Once again, the German Emigration Center Foundation and German Emigration Center Bremerhaven are jointly awarding the Calliope Prize for Practical Migration Research. The award is given every two years and includes 20,000 euros in prize money.

With the award, the German Emigration Center Foundation supports research and (university) projects whose findings help cultural and educational institutions interpret migration effectively and globally. Of particular interest is research that focuses on the social impacts of migration. The ultimate goal is to promote cooperation between universities, non-university institutions, and museums in order to make research results accessible to a broad public. The prize honors a researcher, university department, or department of a non-university research institution based on their two-part application:

1. A completed or in-development research project on one of the following topics:

  • Acculturation
  • Values and norms of a transcultural coexistence
  • Cultural diversity and social mobility
  • Perception of self and others Racism in immigration societies

The award recognizes research and (university) projects – programs, initiatives, publications – about immigration to Europe and European emigration overseas.

2. An idea for a joint project with the German Emigration Center on the established theme. The theme for the 2019 Calliope Prize is: Freedom of movement. What one may do, may everyone? Goal of the cooperative project is to develop and implement a joint:

  • research or education project,
  • conference, or
  • publication. For its part, the German Emigration Center offers its unique collection on the history of emigration and immigration as well as experts on historical migration research and migration studies. Conference rooms for up to 150 participants are also available.

the prize money

The prize money is 20,000 euros.

Part of the prize money (7,500 euros) goes to the institute, department / cooperating departments, or author of the awarded research project to be used at their discretion.

This prize money is intended to be used for honorariums, personnel/material expenses, travel, and other costs incurred by the prize winner as part of the cooperative project. Ideally, additional museums, universities, and non-university research institutions will be involved in this project.

The prize money has been endowed by Dr. Joachim Ditzen-Blanke, the publisher of the newspaper Nordsee-Zeitung, a longtime patron and generous supporter of the German Emigration Center.
