One feels embarrassed to put the question in the title of this paper to colleagues well-versed in social science research: Development and migration – migration and development: what comes first? The answer is obvious, and I am sure we all agree on it: The two are part of the same process and therefore constantly interactive. The question is thus both redundant and nonsensical. And yet I believe that we need to engage seriously with it.
