The first Rinus Penninx Best Paper Award has been awarded to Marie-Laurence Flahaux and Hein de Haas for their paper 'Migration from, to and within Africa: the role of development and states'

The Rinus Penninx Best Paper Award was awarded for the first time to IMI's Marie-Laurence Flahaux and Hein de Haas at the 11th Annual IMISCOE Conference, held in Madrid on 27-29 August 2014.

A total of 21 papers were nominated for the prize, and a jury of nine members, chaired by Rinus Penninx, chose their paper unanimously as the best paper. Of their selection Rinus Penninx said:

“This paper is chosen because of its broad and ambitious approach to migration in the continent of Africa. It is theoretically informed in its approach and technically interesting in its use of new sources. It is consistent in its structure and it leads to conclusions that often do not coincide with the general images of African migration in the media and sometimes are even counterintuitive scientifically.”

Migration from, to and within Africa: the role of development and states was based on research as part of the DEMIG - Determinants of International Migration - project and will be published as an IMI working paper in the coming weeks.
